The revamped Parc de Deauville in Pierrefonds-Roxboro, a vibrant borough west of Montreal, Quebec, is a testament to innovative and community-focused design. This transformative project, which emphasized a connection to nature and inclusivity, recently earned the prestigious Grand Prix du Design 2024 for Certification Argent - Architecture de paysage / Architecture de paysage sur le domaine public.

City officials envisioned a park that would appeal to everyone, from young children to teens and active adults. Trekfit, in collaboration with Techsport, played a pivotal role in designing the park’s dynamic teen and active adult section, offering a space that fosters connection, physical activity, and creativity. The park's distinct areas, seamlessly linked by pathways, embody a harmonious blend of functionality and natural beauty.

This prestigious award highlights the park’s success in setting a new standard for public space design by:

  • Creating a safe, stimulating environment where teenagers can engage in active play and develop physically, socially, and mentally.
  • Providing versatile, innovative fitness structures that appeal to a wide range of skill levels and ages.
  • Serving as a sustainable model for future community park projects.

KEY FEATURES OF THE TREKFIT INSTALLATION

For the teen and adult section, Trekfit proposed four innovative pieces from the Obstacle Challenge and Urban Boulders collections.

The Summit Boulder

The centerpiece of the area, the Summit Boulder, stands 12 feet tall and features hundreds of climbing holds with varying inclines. Its challenging yet approachable design invites teens to push their limits while socializing with friends.

  • Benefits: Builds strength, coordination, and confidence while fostering social interaction.
  • Design: Elevated platforms encourage climbing, sitting, and hanging out—perfect for teen girls seeking spaces where they feel safe and empowered.

The Bamboo Jungle

Inspired by parkour, the Bamboo Jungle is a vibrant obstacle course designed to bring people together. Its color-coded grips allow users of all skill levels to test their agility and balance.

  • Benefits: Encourages teamwork, builds balance and core strength, and enhances coordination.
  • Design: Made from high-durability posts angled at five degrees for a dynamic, challenging course that fits naturally into the park.

The Cargo Net

The Cargo Net combines the thrill of military-style climbing with a modern twist. Its mesh is crafted from galvanized steel cable coated with polyester, ensuring durability and safety.

  • Benefits: Develops upper body strength, balance, and endurance, with inclines that accommodate all fitness levels.
  • Design: The twisted structure adds both aesthetic appeal and workout variety, making it a favorite among teens and active adults.

The Slackline

The Slackline adds an extra layer of fun and challenge for teens. This 12-foot-long feature improves balance and focus while providing an enjoyable, family-friendly activity.

  • Benefits: Enhances concentration, lower body strength, and motor skills.
  • Design: Durable yet accessible, this piece encourages shared activity across age groups.

IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY

The addition of the teen and active adult section has transformed the park into a space that appeals to users of all ages.

  • Teen Engagement: The Trekfit area has become a favorite hangout spot for teens, providing a safe and active environment where they can challenge themselves and connect with peers.
  • Community Feedback: Local residents have praised the design for its inclusivity and ability to meet the needs of both teens and active adults.
  • Inspiration for Designers: The park’s success offers a compelling example of how focused design can cater to specific age groups while enhancing the overall park experience.

IDEAS AND OPPORTUNITIES

This project serves as an inspiring example for designing similar spaces. By incorporating versatile equipment, dynamic zones, and features that foster connection, it demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform public spaces into vibrant community hubs.

Key takeaways include:

  • Targeted Design: Create dedicated sections that address the specific needs of underserved groups, such as teens and active adults.
  • Modular Equipment: Select versatile structures that accommodate users of varying skill levels, ensuring inclusivity.
  • Durability and Integration: Prioritize materials that offer long-term durability while harmonizing with the park's natural surroundings.

Looking ahead, opportunities to enhance the park could include expanding the Trekfit section with additional equipment, hosting community fitness events, or integrating digital technology to engage teens in innovative ways.

By addressing the unique needs of teenagers and active adults, Trekfit and Techsport have played a pivotal role in the revitalization of Parc de Deauville. The teen and adult section demonstrates the value of thoughtful, age-specific design in creating spaces that promote health, social interaction, and community connection.

This project serves as an inspiring example of how tailored equipment and collaboration can enhance community spaces. Consider how Trekfit’s innovative solutions can transform your next park project into a dynamic, inclusive hub for all.
